Lumbar Fusion Surgery
Patients who suffer from conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, spinal instability, or recurrent disc herniation do not have to live in pain. At Surgical Solutions Network, we offer lumbar fusion surgery, also called spinal fusion surgery to stabilize the lower spine to help eliminate painful motion and relieve pain. It involves joining two or more vertebrae together, so they heal into a single solid bone.
At Surgical Solutions Network, our fellowship-trained spine surgeons perform lumbar fusion using advanced techniques, including minimally invasive approaches where suitable, to help patients achieve lasting relief from back and leg pain. We offer timely access to private lumbar fusion procedures at our surgical centres in Toronto, Ontario and Vancouver, British Columbia.
Lumbar fusion surgery will be available at Surgical Solutions Network’s Toronto surgical facility starting Fall 2025.

Why Would You Need Lumbar Fusion Surgery?
Most people with lower back pain find relief with nonsurgical treatments such as physiotherapy, medications, and spinal injections. However, when symptoms persist or worsen despite conservative care, lumbar fusion surgery may be recommended.
Lumbar fusion helps:
- Stabilize the spine in cases of spinal instability.
- Reduce nerve compression caused by abnormal spinal movement.
- Prevent painful movement between vertebrae.
- Improve quality of life in patients whose pain limits daily activities.
Lumbar fusion treats:
- Degenerative disc disease
- Spondylolisthesis (slipping of one vertebra over another)
- Spinal instability after previous surgery
- Recurrent disc herniations
- Severe degenerative arthritis of the spine
- Spinal deformities causing pain or nerve compression
How is Lumbar Fusion Surgery Performed?
Lumbar fusion is performed under general anaesthetic, meaning you’ll be asleep and pain-free during the procedure. After making a small incision, the surgeon removes the damaged disc material or bone and places bone grafts between the vertebrae. Over time, these grafts help the bones grow together into a single solid unit.
To enhance stability while the bones fuse, metal implants such as screws, rods, or cages may be placed along the spine during surgery.
Whenever possible, our surgeons use minimally invasive spine surgery techniques, involving smaller incisions and less muscle disruption, leading to shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery times.
After surgery, patients are monitored and usually stay in hospital for one to several days depending on the extent of the surgery.
Once you return home, your physician will prescribe physical therapy, and you will gradually be able to return to normal activities.
Benefits of Lumbar Fusion Surgery
- Stabilizes unstable spinal segments
- Helps reduce back and leg pain
- May improve nerve pain and other symptoms
- Can improve quality of life when other spine treatments have failed
- Minimally invasive options available for suitable patients
What to Expect After Lumbar Fusion
Recovery time varies depending on the extent of the surgery and your overall health. Many people experience significant improvement in symptoms, but it takes time to regain full strength and mobility.
Physical therapy is an important part of recovery to help restore movement, improve core strength, and protect the spine during healing. Your physician will work with you to develop a physical therapy plan to support your recovery.
