Cataracts are a condition that involves clouding of the lens in an eye, which causes blurred, unclear vision and other symptoms. Cataract surgery removes the cloudy lens from the eye and replaces it with an artificial lens implant (intraocular lens or IOL) that restores clear vision.

What Does Cataract Surgery Treat?
Cataract surgery can restore clear vision in the affected eye. Symptoms of cataracts include:
- Blurry, cloudy vision
- Sensitivity to light
- Faded colours
- Double vision
How Is Cataract Surgery Performed?
You may need to follow specific advice regarding what to eat and drink before cataract surgery. Our surgeons typically perform the surgery while you are awake. After dilating the pupil, the surgeon makes a very small incision in the front of the eye and inserts a thin ultrasound device to break up the cloudy lens (phacoemulsification). The lens pieces are removed from the eye using suction. The surgeon then inserts an intraocular lens (IOL) in place of the natural lens.
The procedure uses tiny incisions for faster recovery times and less risk of complications.
How Long Does It Take for Recovery From Cataract Surgery?
After surgery, you are taken to a recovery room to be monitored and will see the surgeon in their office later in the day to confirm the position of the lens. The procedure does not require an overnight stay. You need to have a trusted adult on hand to drive you home. You will usually wear an eye patch for a few days after surgery.
