What Causes Endometriosis?

There is no known cause for endometriosis, but endometriosis occurs when tissue that typically grows inside of the uterus grows outside of it. The tissue can attach to your organs, including your uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, causing discomfort, pain, and may affect your ability to have children.

There is no cure for endometriosis, but laparoscopic surgery to treat endometriosis can reduce the amount of tissue to reduce pain and improve your chances of getting pregnant.

What to Expect

Laparoscopic endometriosis treatment is performed under general anesthesia, meaning you will be asleep during the procedure. Once you are asleep, the surgeon makes a small incision in your abdomen, near your belly button. They then fill your abdomen with gas and insert a laparoscope, a tiny camera, to look for scarring and excess tissue on your reproductive organs.

If the surgeon identifies signs of endometriosis, they can remove the tissue during the laparoscopy at that time. Depending on how much tissue needs to be removed, the surgery can last from 30 minutes to several hours. Once the tissue has been removed, the laparoscope is removed and the incision is closed with stitches.

Recovery After Endometriosis Treatment

After surgery, you are taken to a recovery room to be monitored in case there are any complications. Since the procedure is minimally invasive, you should be able to return home the same day, but you may need to stay overnight if the surgery is more complicated.

You may experience some pain after surgery, which your surgeon will help you manage. It usually takes a few weeks to fully recover, depending on the severity of your endometriosis and the amount of tissue removed. You can return to work within a couple of weeks but should refrain from strenuous physical activity for several weeks.
