Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery

Transform your health and quality of life with one of the most well-established weight loss procedures available. Surgical Solutions Network offers private weight loss surgery for patients throughout Canada.

What is Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass?

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) is a proven and effective weight loss surgery that reduces the size of your stomach and reroutes your digestive system. The procedure limits how much food you can eat and how many calories your body absorbs, helping you lose significant weight and improve or resolve obesity-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and hypertension.

How It Works

During gastric bypass surgery, the surgeon:

  • Creates a small stomach pouch, roughly the size of an egg, by dividing the upper portion of the stomach.
  • Reroutes a section of the small intestine (the “Roux limb”) and connects it directly to the new pouch.
  • Food bypasses a large portion of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine, resulting in reduced calorie and nutrient absorption.

This combination of restriction and malabsorption leads to significant, sustainable weight loss when paired with lifestyle changes.

What to Expect

Consultation

You’ll meet with an experienced bariatric surgeon to discuss your goals, medical history, and whether gastric bypass is the right option for you. Pre-surgical assessments and lab work will be required before undergoing surgery to ensure you’re a good candidate.

Surgery

Performed under general anaesthesia, the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery procedure typically takes 2–3 hours and is completed laparoscopically, which is a minimally invasive technique to reduce scarring and promote faster healing.

Recovery

Patients usually stay overnight in one of our private, modern recovery suites. Most return to light activities within 2 weeks. A gradual return to normal eating is guided through a structured post-op nutrition plan.
