Cervical Spine Surgery

Cervical spine surgery refers to a range of procedures used to treat conditions affecting the neck portion of the spine. These conditions can place pressure on the spinal cord or nerves, leading to symptoms such as neck pain, arm pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and difficulty with balance or coordination. When non-surgical treatment options are no longer providing relief, cervical spine surgery may help reduce pain, protect nerve function, and improve quality of life.

At Surgical Solutions Network, our fellowship-trained spine surgeons perform advanced cervical spine procedures, including cervical decompression and cervical spine fusion, to help patients find lasting relief. We offer timely access to private cervical spine surgery at our surgical centres in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Toronto, Ontario.

Common Conditions Treated

Cervical spine surgery may be recommended for patients with:

  • Cervical disc herniation
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Cervical spinal stenosis
  • Cervical radiculopathy
  • Cervical myelopathy
  • Bone spurs causing nerve compression
  • Spinal instability or slippage in the cervical spine
  • Recurrent symptoms after previous cervical spine treatme

When is Cervical Spine Surgery Recommended?

Many patients improve with non-surgical treatments such as physiotherapy, medication, activity modification, or spinal injections. However, surgery may be recommended when symptoms persist, worsen, or begin affecting strength, coordination, mobility, or everyday function.

Cervical spine surgery may help relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves, stabilize the spine, and prevent further neurological decline.

Types of Cervical Spine Surgery

The type of surgery recommended depends on the condition being treated, the location of the problem, and the patient’s overall spinal health.

Cervical Decompression

Cervical decompression surgery removes the structures that are pressing on the spinal cord or nerve roots. This may involve removing disc material, bone spurs, or thickened ligaments.

Cervical Spine Fusion

Cervical spine fusion is often performed when the spine also needs to be stabilized. In this procedure, two or more vertebrae are joined together so they heal into one solid bone. This can help reduce painful motion, restore stability, and support the spine after decompression.

In many cases, cervical decompression and fusion are performed together as part of the same surgery.

How is Cervical Spine Surgery Performed?

Cervical spine surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, meaning you will be asleep and pain-free during the procedure. Depending on the diagnosis, surgery may be performed through the front of the neck or the back of the neck.

One common procedure is anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), where the damaged disc is removed through a small incision in the front of the neck, pressure is relieved from the nerves or spinal cord, and the spine is stabilized with a graft and small implants.

Posterior approaches may also be used in some cases, depending on the location and extent of compression.

Our surgeons use advanced techniques to support the best possible outcomes and recovery.

Benefits of Cervical Spine Surgery

  • Relief from neck and arm pain
  • Improvement in numbness, tingling, or weakness
  • Reduced pressure on the spinal cord or nerves
  • Stabilization of the cervical spine when needed
  • Improved function, mobility, and quality of life
  • Protection against further neurological deterioratio

Recovery After Cervical Spine Surgery

Recovery time depends on the specific procedure performed and the patient’s overall health. Some patients go home the same day, while others may require an overnight stay.

After surgery, patients are given detailed instructions regarding activity, lifting restrictions, incision care, and follow-up. In some cases, physiotherapy may be recommended as part of recovery.

Our team supports patients throughout the healing process and provides guidance to help them return safely to daily activities.
