What Is Revision Surgery?

Revision surgery is a broad term encompassing various procedures performed on patients who have previously undergone bariatric surgery. The specific procedure recommended by your surgeon will depend on the type of initial surgery you had and the reasons for revision. Most revision surgeries we perform involve revising a Lap-Band to a gastric sleeve or a mini gastric bypass or revising a gastric sleeve to a mini gastric bypass.

Here are some of the common scenarios that may necessitate revision surgery:

Insufficient Weight Loss or Weight Regain:

If you haven’t achieved or maintained the desired level of weight loss after the initial surgery.

Complications:

To address issues arising from the original surgery.

During your consultation, our surgeon will thoroughly evaluate your medical history, previous surgery details, and current weight loss goals. They will then recommend the most suitable revision procedure for your unique situation.

What Are the Benefits of Revision Surgery?

Revision weight loss surgery can offer a range of potential benefits, including:

Improved Weight Loss:

Revision surgery can help you achieve significant and sustained weight loss.

Reduced Complications:

Revision surgery can address complications arising from the original procedure, such as acid reflux, improving your overall health and well-being.

Enhanced Health Outcomes:

Weight loss achieved through revision surgery can improve obesity-related health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and high blood pressure.

Renewed Motivation:

Revision surgery can offer a fresh start and renewed motivation to achieve your weight loss goals and lead a healthier life.

Am I a Good Candidate for Revision Surgery?

Revision weight loss surgery may be a suitable option for you if:

  • You are age 18 or older
  • You haven’t achieved or maintained desired results from previous weight loss surgery
  • You are willing to undergo revision surgery and understand the recovery process, potential risks, and associated lifestyle changes
  • You are committed to implementing positive lifestyle changes, including dietary modifications and regular exercise

During your consultation with your bariatric surgeon, we will assess your unique goals and medical history to determine if revision weight loss surgery is right for you.

How Long Is Recovery After Revision Surgery?

After revision weight loss surgery, the recovery process is generally similar to your initial bariatric procedure. However, the complexity of the revision surgery may influence the recovery timeline.

Here’s a general timeframe of what you can expect:

Hospital Stay:

Typically, you’ll stay overnight at our facility and be discharged the following day.

Returning to Work and Daily Activities:

Most patients return to work and light activity within 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the complexity of the procedure and individual recovery rate. Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least 4 to 6 weeks.

Dietary Progression:

You’ll follow a structured diet plan after surgery. You’ll start with liquids and gradually progress to soft foods over the first few weeks. It typically takes 4 to 6 weeks to comfortably return to a regular diet.
