Gastric Balloon
The gastric balloon is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive weight-loss procedure that can help patients achieve significant and sustainable weight reduction. A soft, durable silicone balloon is placed in the stomach and filled with sterile saline, creating a feeling of fullness with smaller meals. This helps reduce appetite and portion sizes, supporting long-term lifestyle changes and weight loss.
At Surgical Solutions Network, our experienced bariatric surgeons provide gastric balloon procedures at our accredited Toronto surgical centre for patients throughout Canada. We combine advanced medical care with personalized nutrition and lifestyle support to help you succeed in reaching your weight-loss goals.
*Coming soon! Gastric Balloon surgery will soon be offered at Surgical Solutions Network’s Toronto surgical facility.

Why Choose the Gastric Balloon?
Unlike traditional bariatric surgery, the gastric balloon does not require incisions, permanent alterations to the digestive tract, or a lengthy recovery period. It’s an ideal option for patients who:
- Have a BMI (Body Mass Index) between 27 and 40
- Struggle to lose weight through diet and exercise alone
- Want a reversible, nonsurgical weight-loss solution
- Are committed to adopting healthy eating and activity habits
How the Gastric Balloon Works
Step 1: Placement
- The procedure involves swallowing a capsule containing the deflated balloon, attached to a thin tube called a catheter.
- An X-ray is done to ensure the capsule is placed correctly in the stomach.
- Once in place, the balloon is filled with sterile saline until it’s about the size of a grapefruit.
- A second X-ray is done to ensure the balloon is filled correctly.
- The catheter is gently removed, and the placement is complete.
Step 2: Duration
- The balloon remains in the stomach for 4 months.
- During this time, you’ll work closely with our nutrition team to develop healthier eating habits.
Step 3: Removal
- Approximately 4 months after placement, a time-activated release valve will open, allowing the balloon to empty and pass naturally through the gastrointestinal tract without the need for a removal procedure.
- You’ll continue receiving lifestyle and nutritional support to help maintain your weight loss.
Benefits of the Gastric Balloon
- Nonsurgical and incision-free
- Short placement time (20–30 minutes)
- Same-day discharge
- Average weight loss of 10–15% of starting body weight in 6 months
- Improved health outcomes, including better blood sugar control, reduced blood pressure, and improved mobility
- Support from a multidisciplinary team for long-term success
What to Expect from a Gastric Balloon Procedure
Before the Procedure
- You’ll have an initial consultation with our bariatric team to confirm eligibility and review your medical history.
- Pre-procedure testing and dietary instructions will be provided.
After Placement
- Mild nausea, bloating, or discomfort are common for the first few days as your body adjusts to the gastric balloon.
- You’ll follow a gradual diet progression from liquids to soft foods, then regular healthy meals.
- You’ll receive follow-up care from our bariatric clinician team and your primary care provider.
- Ongoing nutrition counselling and coaching is available through our aftercare nutrition partner, LMC.
After Removal
- Continued support is provided to help you maintain weight loss through diet, exercise, and healthy habits.
Who is Not a Candidate for the Gastric Balloon?
The gastric balloon may not be recommended if you:
- Have had previous stomach or oesophageal surgery
- Have large hiatal hernias, active gastrointestinal bleeding, or severe reflux disease
- Are pregnant or planning pregnancy within the treatment period
- Have certain untreated psychiatric or eating disorders
Our medical team will determine your suitability during your initial assessment.
