What Is Spinal Stenosis?
Spinal stenosis is a condition that occurs when the spaces within the spine narrow, putting pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. This can result from degenerative arthritis, thickened ligaments, or bulging discs.
Candidates for Spinal Decompression Surgery
In many cases, spinal stenosis symptoms can be managed with nonsurgical treatments such as physiotherapy, medication, or spinal injections. However, if symptoms persist or become severe enough to limit your ability to walk, stand, work, or perform daily activities, surgery may be recommended.
Spinal decompression surgery helps create more space within the spinal canal or around the nerve roots to relieve pressure and reduce symptoms. The goal is to help patients regain mobility, reduce pain, and improve quality of life.
What is Claudication?
One of the key symptoms of spinal stenosis is neurogenic claudication, which occurs when the narrowed spinal canal pinches the nerves that travel from the spine to the legs. This can reduce blood flow and cause discomfort during activity.
Signs and symptoms of claudication include:
- Pain, numbness, or tingling in the legs
- Weakness while standing or walking
- Needing to sit or lean forward for relief
- Limited ability to walk long distances without stopping
How is Spinal Decompression Surgery Performed?
Spinal decompression is typically performed under general anaesthetic, so you’ll be asleep and pain-free during surgery. Surgical techniques vary depending on your specific condition, but common procedures include:
- Laminectomy: Removal of part of the bony arch (lamina) of the vertebra to create more space for the spinal cord and nerves.
- Foraminotomy: Widening of the openings where nerve roots exit the spinal canal.
- Discectomy: Removal of part of a herniated disc that may be pressing on nerves.
Our surgeons often use minimally invasive spine surgery techniques that utilize smaller incisions, less muscle disruption, and faster recovery times than traditional surgery. Incisions are closed with dissolving sutures, and many patients are able to go home the same day or after an overnight stay, depending on the extent of the surgery.
Benefits of Minimally Invasive Spinal Decompression
- Smaller incisions and less scarring
- Reduced blood loss during surgery
- Less postoperative pain
- Shorter hospital stay or same-day discharge
- Faster return to daily activities
What Can Spinal Decompression Treat?
- Lumbar spinal stenosis
- Neurogenic claudication
- Nerve compression causing leg pain, weakness, or numbness
- Difficulty walking due to spinal narrowing
