If you’re considering travelling to the U.S. for private hip or knee replacement surgery, you have options closer to home in Canada. Many Canadians are choosing to travel to have their surgery performed at a Surgical Solutions Network centre.
“If you’re a golfer, a skier or biker, you want to keep doing what you love,” says Sara Mooney, Director of Operations at the Surgical Solutions Network Surgical Centre in Toronto. “You want to be able to live your life without pain, and so we’re offering Canadians a choice.”
How Long Does Access to Hip or Knee Replacement Surgery Take?
Patients who seek these procedures often face long waits. In most provinces and territories, it’s not uncommon to wait up to a year for a consultation and another year or two for the actual surgery. In these instances people are looking for other options, typically the USA. Now they can stay in Canada, often with shorter wait times.
At Surgical Solutions Network Surgical Centre Toronto, patients can usually be accommodated to have the procedure done within a month of their initial inquiry. Initial consults are conducted via telemedicine following a thorough review of a patients’ diagnostics, past and present medical history. Telemedicine is also used pre and post-operation, to ensure that a patient feels comfortable and allows them to address any questions they may have.
We also perform hip replacement surgery at Canadian Surgery Solutions in Calgary, Alberta, and Chirurgie DIX30 in Brossard, Quebec. Knee replacement surgery is available at the same locations as well as at Rockyview Surgical Centre in Calgary.
Attentive, Advanced Care
“We support patients as much or little as they need, working with them and those within their existing circle of care, family practitioners, physio and occupational therapists — before and after the procedure,” explains Mooney.
For hip replacements, surgeons opt for a direct anterior approach, a less invasive method. This technique involves operating from the front of the thigh to reach the hip joint, versus the traditional method of operating on the side or back. The anterior approach requires much less cutting and reattaching tendons and muscles. The direct anterior approach results in quicker recovery and less post-op pain compared to traditional hip replacement methods.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
Our Toronto Centre’s operating room is also equipped with a Hana table—a specially designed surgical table that allows for the surgeons to easily move the patient’s legs intraoperatively to ensure everything is balanced and aligned during the procedure.
Surgeons also use a digital 3D measurement system called Intellijoints which helps accurately place and position implants needed for hip replacements and can greatly reduce recurrent instability, dislocation, and costly revision surgery.
Getting Started
“Wait times are a problem across Canada, so we’re glad to be able to offer people an alternative.” says Mooney “Not everyone wants to travel, but if you are considering going elsewhere you now have a choice.”
