Dr. Mark Dickeson

Dr. Mark Dickeson

Dr. Dickeson has worked as a general surgeon in Metro Vancouver at a busy suburban hospital since completing his residency training in General Surgery at the University of British Columbia in 2010. Prior to that, he completed his undergraduate degrees in Science (BSc Biochemistry, 1999) and Arts (BA Anthropology, 2000) at the University of New Brunswick. He then completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD, 2004) at Memorial University of Newfoundland before moving to Vancouver for his residency training in General Surgery at UBC from 2004–2010. He also obtained a Master of Education (MEd Adult Education, 2007) from UBC.

In addition to a very busy clinical practice, he remains devoted to teaching the next generation of learners. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the UBC Department of Surgery and has served as the site teaching lead for Burnaby Hospital since 2014. He has won teaching awards as both a resident and a faculty member. Dr. Dickeson has always been committed to advancing surgical care in an administrative capacity and is currently in his second term as the Surgery Department Head for Burnaby Hospital, Fraser Health Authority. He previously served as President of the General Surgeons of BC from 2014–2017.

Despite the many forces vying for his time, Dr. Dickeson always prioritizes patient care. He values the relationships with his patients and colleagues that have been forged and maintained since establishing his practice in Burnaby in 2010. This includes a strong base of referring family physicians who have entrusted him with the care of multiple patient family members—often across several generations.

Outside of medicine, what brings him the most joy is spending time with his family, including his young son, whom he coaches in soccer and hockey. He also finds time to play hockey several times per week, and in the summer he enjoys spending weekends away from the city, often relaxing on BC’s Sunshine Coast.
