Dr. Lea Austen

Dr. Lea Austen is an experienced general surgeon in Calgary with a practice in abdominal wall hernia repair. With over 25 years of surgical experience, he provides expert care using both minimally invasive (laparoscopic) and open techniques, tailored to each patient’s needs. 

He has been on staff at Rockyview General Hospital since completing his General Surgery residency at the University of Calgary in 2000. He also holds a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology, supporting his commitment to evidence-based, high-quality care. 

Dr. Austen is known for delivering efficient, patient-centered treatment with a focus on timely access, clear communication, and excellent outcomes. In addition to hernia surgery, his clinical experience includes a focus on breast cancer care, gallbladder disease, gastrointestinal conditions, and emergency general surgery. 

He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary and has received multiple awards for teaching medical students and surgical residents. 

Dr. Austen has held numerous leadership roles throughout his career, including 14 years as Site Lead for General Surgery at Rockyview General Hospital. He has also been actively involved in surgical quality improvement initiatives at both the hospital and provincial level; as well as surgical health technology assessment at regional and provincial levels. 

He is committed to providing safe, efficient, and compassionate surgical care, helping patients return to their normal activities as quickly as possible.
